About me
Who am I?
I am Graham Clarke, and here’s a photograph of me wearing a suit against a linocut background.

As a an avid reader and book lover, I want to see a great finished product as much as you. And being a writer and artist myself, I know how difficult it can be to get things the way you want them to be, and keep all the plates spinning.
Working with an editor is a crucial step on the way to completion. My approach is a careful balance between expertise and discussion. Working from the belief that you know best, I make suggestions and create solutions for you to go forward with. I'll never recommend anything if I'm not sure of your intentions, and if I'm not sure I will talk to you about it. This means that your work will never lose your distinctive voice in the edit. The way I see it is as a collaboration.

All writers are different. All books are unique. It’s always about creating the best version of your ideas. I am flexible in terms of my service offer and will always take the time to tailor an edit to your personal needs.
My input is clear, concise and constructive. I always think about what will be most useful for you, and I never try to impose my personal taste on your work.
Writers have praised my professionalism, my willingness to discuss and dissect, and my friendliness and openness. I enjoy my work, and it shows in the way I interact with clients.

I’ve had the privilege of seeing books at all different stages of the process, from dramatically overhauling plot and direction, to advising on tone and voice consistency, and final checks before publication.
For fiction editors I offer developmental editing, which offers structural advice while the ideas are still coming together.
For writers of all kinds as well as publishers I offer copy editing and proofreading, making sure that texts are clear, coherent and error-free before finding their way to the reader’s hands.
You can find out more about all these in the Services section.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with a wide variety of writers, and through different projects I’ve been involved in editing at every stage of the publishing process.
I am a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), which means that I have been verified by them and that I abide by their standards.
I have qualifications in copy editing from CIEP and the Publishing Training Centre, and fiction editing from CIEP and Liminal Pages, all of whom are known and respected in the publishing world.
